a day in the life of beck is my fave

March 14, 2013

Before Beck was born I had high hopes that I would be a champion documenter, or at least not be the mom who forgets the things I’ve already forgotten. To make up for my lack of journaling, every couple of months I consciously carry the camera around with me for one entire day and capture Beck in our everyday routines. He looked awfully cute in new clothes from Tea yesterday so I decided to have the camera be my accessory. Here’s bits of yesterday (thanks for indulging me):

day in the life of a 10 month old

day in the life of a 10 month old

day in the life of a 10 month old

day in the life of a 10 month old

day in the life of a 10 month old

day in the life of a 10 month old

I share this because I know I’m not the only admirer of candid children’s portraits like those on You Are My Wild and I’ve wanted to learn how to take similar photos of my own kids. I know my photos don’t even compare to the talent of those photographers but I will tell you the more I do this exercise, the better I get. It forces me to play with perspective and I like seeing the personality that comes through in a day full of photos. Try it out for yourself, I think you’ll be a fan.

All clothing is from one of my no-fail brands, Tea: vilakazi stripe footie pajamas, sunrise plaid shirt, sharp chinos, happy hoodie, skinny french terry cargo pants, flower petal top

Such a great idea!!! You always have the photos of them doing the extra special fun stuff but not always the everyday. I am totally going to try this!!

I love this! He’s so cute and this is such a good idea. I should do this. Your photography is really improving! And I miss you.

One thing that I started doing a year and a half ago is writing letters to my girls. Just something short about whatever thing they’re up to (walking, dress-up, crawling, funny things they say). I went through this panic phase where I was worried I’d die and then they’d have to sift through my journals to find the “good stuff” about them. So I started writing letters. I write about twice a month, and I plan to compile them into a book with photos every couple of years. I like that it doesn’t take long and I can do it on my computer. I also sign the letter the same. I kind of love it. I’m a historian at heart.

These are the photos you will treasure, not the posed ones. I am always trying to reassure my clients they will be happy if their child does not sit perfectly still for photos.

He is so adorable, and the photos are beautiful! Never apologize for showing off such a cutie!

I regret not documenting my pregnancy but even that is not motivation enough to always remember the camera. Mommy brain is no joke huh?

Your pics are great. You’re never going to look back and say you hate the photos because the “composition is wrong”. They are all great memories, right?

So stinkin’ cute! Photography really is one of those things like pro sports – the more you practice, the better you get. A lot of it is muscle memory, and knowing how to respond to each situation. Hope you keep this series going! :)
