the best basic tee is my fave

best t shirt
I tried on twenty t-shirts so you don’t have to.

Here are the qualities I was looking for: longer length, not too form fitting, scoop or v-neck, not too sheer, no cap sleeves, reasonably priced. Here are the results.

Please note: I am 5’4″, 125 pounds, boy and pear shaped – meaning I’m straight and flat and carry my weight in my thighs and bottom (if that wasn’t a flattering description, I don’t know what is). These recommendations might not work for other shapes and sizes.

Also, I’ve only worn and washed the tees I kept a handful of times. I have yet to determine how they hold up. If they get those little holes soon, I will shame them publicly.

Let’s jump to the winners:

best women's t shirt

Gap V-Neck Linen Tee
Pros: nice drape, nice linen blend fabric
Cons: slightly sheer

This is my favorite fit of all the tees I tried. It drapes nicely away from my stomach but isn’t too wide in the neck. I wish I didn’t have to wear a cami underneath it but I’m afraid in the sunlight I would be showing too much. I bought this in three colors and wear them often.

best women's t shirt

JCrew Speckled Cotton Scoopneck Tee
Pros: cotton/poly blend for that vintage tee feel, scoop neck that’s not too scoopy, slim fit but not clingy
Cons: JCrew tees are prone to those little holes

Oh JCrew, I can’t quit you. Their tees fit and flatter but I’m holding my breath until the small holes appear. I hope it’s not until I wear this one every day this summer.

Lands’ End Short Sleeve Slub Jersey V-neck T-shirt
Pros: good quality fabric, good color selection, form fitting but not tight, could be worn by all ages
Cons: a conservative fit/slightly boring (this might not be a con to all of you)

This is just a great, classic fit tee. The fabric has a stretch but the fit is slub so it doesn’t cling. I feel like this would look good on almost any body shape. Size down.

best women's t shirt

Madewell Slub V-Neck Pocket Tee
Pros: nice slouchy fit, large color selection, soft material
Cons: wide v-neck

I liked this one the instant I tried it on. A soft, boyish tee that looks great with jeans. I did notice that the neck stretches out during wear so I had to adjust quite a bit by dinnertime.

Honorable Mentions (I own most of these and would recommend them):

Banana Republic New Essential Vee
Pros: nice fabric, keeps shape, perfect v-neck
Cons: form fitting, clingy

Old Navy Women’s Linen-Blend Boyfriend Tees
Pros: nice slouch, cute pocket
Cons: slightly boxy, slightly sheer

Old Navy Women’s Vintage-Style V-Neck Tees
Pros: cotton/poly blend for a vintage tee feel, several colors
Cons: the sizes jump too much (xs is too form fitting, s is loose in an awkward way)

Everlane The Cotton V
Pros: good quality, classic fit
Cons: a little too short and form fitting for my liking

I’ve tried Everlane several times but I’m always disappointed in the length.

American Apparel Tri-Blend Short Sleeve Women’s Track T
Pros: cotton/poly blend for a vintage tee feel
Cons: crew neck, form fitting

Lou & Grey Signature Tee
Pros: soft, nice slim fit with slight drape, long
Cons: color selection, too sheer

Uniqlo Supima Cotton Washed V Neck
Pros: nice fabric, nice price, good color choice, keeps it’s shape
Cons: a little too form fitting

Don’t bother:
Truly Madly Deeply Scoopneck Slouch Pocket Tee from Urban Outfitters
Cons: too short, boxy

Forever 21 Scoop Neck Slub Knit Tee
Cons: cheap, oversized in not a good way

Forever 21 Classic V Neck Tee
Cons: cheap, v-neck too deep, weird sizing

Everlane The Ryan Pocket Tee
Pros: good quality
Cons: weird boxy fit, too short

Burnout V-neck Tee
Pros: soft fabric
Cons: the sleeve length and v-neck were slightly off, color selection

American Eagle Favorite V-Neck T-Shirt
Pros: color selection
Cons: stiff fabric, not a great fit

Uniqlo Drape Short Sleeve T
Cons: strange fit, too short

American Eagle Soft and Sexy Pocket Jegging T-Shirt
Cons: strange fit

Banana Republic Drapey Pocket Tee
Pros: nice drape, good colors
Cons: wrinkles easily, sheer

Let’s review:

If you’re looking for a v-neck with a nice drape, go with Gap V-Neck Linen Tee.

If you’re looking for a soft tee that’s more form fitting, go with JCrew Speckled Cotton Scoopneck Tee.

If you’re looking for a classic fit v-neck, go with Lands’ End Short Sleeve Slub Jersey V-neck T-shirt or Everlane The Cotton V.
